Exactly one year ago today I opened Michael Escalera Photography in Roanoke after moving here from the Rocky Mountain region. I had been shooting for seven years prior to moving and was reasonably established, but I was still the newbie upon moving to Virginia.

I did some market research and set some goals before I opened the business, and so I wanted to share them with you and just show how much God has blessed my business!

Between May 1st and December 31st, 2005 I made a goal to book eight weddings and exceeded that goal by two - booking ten for the year.

For 2006 I made a goal of booking 15 weddings and as of today I have 23 booked for this year! There are already several booked for 2007 and I am so excited!

Now let me stop for a minute and clarify that while booking more weddings is exciting, I am not out to book larger numbers every year. There are several reasons for this, but my primary one is wanting to limit the amount of weddings that I accept so that I am able to give each client the attention they deserve. I believe that if I do not place a limit at some point my clients will begin to suffer, and that is not at all the direction that I am wanting to head.

Some other highlights of this past year were getting accepted into the exclusive Wedding Photojournalist Association, and launching my new website, blog, and logo! It has been an incredible year of learning, growth, and experience.

This year would have never been possible without first and foremost, God’s hand on the business. Second is Leah’s wonderful support and patience with me through many long hours working on the business. Third would be all of my wonderful clients - for choosing me and allowing me to be a part of your lives. Last, but certainly not least, my photographer friends scattered throughout the States, Canada, and other parts of the world.

All of you have helped to see me through to where I am now and I am forever grateful. Thank you for a wonderful year, and I am looking forward to what’s next!
